Whoopie pies have been around for a long time in America, but have recently seen a dramatic rise in popularity around the world, and especially across Europe. The real story of these fabulous little ‘pies’ starts in the 1920’s when Amish farmers’ wives would make them as a treat for their husbands from left over cake batter. Legend has it that when the farmers discovered these cakes in their lunch boxes they would shout ‘whoopie!’, and a fitting name for such a fun, simple treat was born.
Since then whoopie pies have remained ever-popular across the US and especially in New England where it’s not uncommon to see roadside farm stands offering their freshly baked adaptations. Despite this, these delicious, traditional treats remained ‘state side’ for several decades until their recent introduction to the European market. Since arriving in the UK, whoopie pies have quickly grown in popularity and unsurprisingly this trend has been recognised by a host of food services businesses, from leading coffee shop chains to department stores and supermarkets.
